‘British jobs for British workers’ etc – but who is British and who is not?
Asked: ‘British jobs for British workers’ etc – but who is British and who is not?
Hello everybody,
Perhaps everybody who follows current events the UK is aware of the debate related to immigration which has intensified even more in the last couple of months. The economic crisis in Europe, means, among other things, that 'foreign' workers may face a hostile reception.
The UK's position is somewhat specific because of London being one of the world's financial centres and a multicultural city where highly-qualified people from all over the world live and work. Apart from that, there have been large immigration waves in different periods and from different countries.
'British jobs for British workers' has become a kind of a slogan. However, there are so many cases where it's very difficult to make the division 'we, the locals/the British' and 'they, the foreigners'.
What if the person has one British and one non-British parent, speaks both languages as a mother language and feels connected to the countries of both his parents?
What if the person has no British roots but their family has come to the UK decades ago and the person has grown up in the UK?
What about a person who has British parents but has spent all his life so far abroad? Then who is more 'British' – the one who has British parents but has never lived in the UK or the one who has no British parents but has lived all his life and feels part of the UK?
Would you agree it's very difficult to make a distinction sometimes? And how would you solve the 'British' or 'non-British' quiz? And doesn't this show that the division 'we, the locals' – 'you, the foreign ones' is sometimes way too ambiguous to be taken that seriously?
Your answers would be appreciated, thanks!

Am 16 years old, can i sell some stuff on Ebay?
Asked: Am 16 years old, can i sell some stuff on Ebay?
Basically am 16 years old and i want to sell some stuff on ebay (just a pair of shoes i hardly use) and i don't know if i am old enough to do so.
i was told by my friend that
"UK law you can technically (for unrestricted items) trade at any age, however obviously having a business bank account under the age of 16 you would probably need your parents to counter sign the legal documents. "
I am 16 years old and i have two bank accounts that i opened by myself (one with santandere and another with RBS Bank) so i was just wondering if it would work for me to sell my old trainers to get some money? I mean obviously because of my age i can't make a paypal account, but is there anyway for me to bypass this, but still be safe for me to shop/sell. I mean will it be DANGEROUS if i don't?

I want to go back to college (UK) but I am 25 and have a 5 year old child?
Asked: I want to go back to college (UK) but I am 25 and have a 5 year old child?
So I'm currently employed part time while my child is in nursery, she will be starting reception in September and will be at school full time so I wanted to take the opportunity to go to college and better myself rather then be a waitress for the rest of my life. I spoke to the college and their advisor told me that as I am a single parent if I didn't have a job and was in receipt of income support I'd be able to claim a bursary for help with before/after school costs for my daughter which I will need. I made an appointment with an advisor at the job centre to talk about this and she told me that as of my child's 5th birthday I am no longer entitled to income support and if I was unemployed then I would have to sign on JSA (job seekers allowance) which in turn means being a "job seeker" and not being entitled to any kind of help with full time college courses. I am really confused, the only reason I need help with childcare costs is because of the travel time and distance to get to the college. If any one can give me any advice i'd be so greatful, my mid is boggled is nothing ever straight forward?

Does anyone live in essex? Or understand the essex dialect?
Asked: Does anyone live in essex? Or understand the essex dialect?
I am writing an English spoken language essay on the essex dialect. Only problem is I don't live in essex, I chose to analyse a different region in the uk other than my own. This made it difficult to analyse the way in which they speak. The words they use, how it might change in a different context (like speaking differently with friends) and what it is about the type of words they use that make them sound unintelligent. I'm trying to prove that just because someone is from essex doesn't mean they lack intelligence. But it's really hard because I'm not from essex. I know that not there are famous people from essex that don't speak like the "TOWIE" cast. But I don't know how to differentiate them.
What I need help on: What is is about the words they use, and how they pronounce it that makes them sound unintelligent? Is it the dropping of letters? Or not finishing sentences? Or abbreviating them?
Also how does it change according to who they speak to? Do they speak like that to parents and friends? and school? Or speak differently to parents than to friends? How does it change?
PLEASE HELP. THANK YOU.

UK visa help, PLEASE?
Asked: UK visa help, PLEASE?
I'm engaged and moving to the UK to be with my fiance, bring along my three year old daughter. My fiance is a UK resident, my daughter and I are American. I know I have to apply for the fiance visa, but what are the expenses for that? And being previously marrried and divorced, do I need divorce papers? Also, my three year old daughter is in my care, not my ex's. I'm her primary parent, though he doesn't express any regards towards her, no child support, no phone calls, no visitations. He neevr showed up to any of the child support courts, child custody court, and no divorce court. I'm getting a court ordered passport for my daughter, just having to make the attorney fees at the moment before it goes infront of the judge. I sent out the letter by TN law, informing my ex of the situation and a chance to appeal, which he did not. What visa should I get for my daughter, and how do I go about doing so? What are the expenses and timing for getting us to be with my fiance? If you have prior experience, you're answers would be helpful, thanks.
Thank you and Godbless

Will I be kicked out of college (Please read)?
Asked: Will I be kicked out of college (Please read)?
I'm speaking about a UK college for 16 year olds and above.
The course I study at college is basically just like school with school based subjects (I study History and English Literature) They're called A-levels or advanced levels. (This is for you American readers)
At the end of last year in November time I had severe attendance issues that lead to my personal college tutor and the head of sixth form having a meeting with my parents. My parents were the ones to ask for this meeting, it wasn't the college at all.
Issues were resolved and I started college again in January as I normally would, however my personal college tutor put me on a mentoring report to keep track with my progress as I'm significantly behind.
Despite being behind I still managed to take my English Literature exam last week and today I had another exam (History)
It snowed very badly during the night and college announced that it was closed, other than for History exam students.
When I tried to walk to college this morning the entire sidewalk was black ice and I could barely stand up on it, I couldn't ask for a car ride or anything as my parents won't take the car out in snow.
I reported my issue to the college and they took my details, saying they'd pass them on to my personal tutor.
At some point this afternoon I got a very angry phone call from my personal tutor asking where I had been for the exam. I told him everything and he was incredibly rude and said "I drove past your house earlier and the snow isn't that bad.. you have NO excuse for not coming in"
He then said to me; "When is your next lesson in college?" I said that I started college on Thursday again for History as I get Wednesdays off. He then said "Well I think we'll have to have a meeting with the head of sixth form on Thursday to review your progress as this really isn't good enough.."
He sounded super angry but he didn't mention anything about taking my parents, he just wants to see me..
Does it sound like I'll be kicked out? I've received no warnings previously..
Thanks for any answers in advance

Is this proof of settled status?
Asked: Is this proof of settled status?
As you might know if one was born in the UK before 2000 and after 1983 as long as you are an EEA citizen you would automatically acquire British citizenship.
My question is that I have this paper http://imgur.com/1W38b
And it clearly says EEC citizen does this prove my parents were EEA citizens thus I would be a British citizen.
I'm also Portuguese.
