People Want To Be Loved Specially.

www.happiness-project.com Sometimes, an idea sounds so simple, and so non-controversial, that it takes a while to appreciate how important and helpful it is. I found this to be true about a happiness-project resolution I made after reading the brilliant parenting book, How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk. In it, the authors Faber and Mazlish suggest acknowledging the reality of other people's feelings instead of denying feelings like anger, irritation, fear, or reluctance. articulate the other person's point of view. In other words, Make people happier by acknowledging that they're not feeling happy. Sounds easy, right? Wrong. I had no idea how often I contradicted other people's assertions of their feelings until I tried to quit. "You always have fun when we go." "You should be thrilled, this is great news." "It won't be that much work." I had the opportunity to put this resolution into action just yesterday, over a minor issue that could nevertheless have turned into a big pain. We've had a lot of snow here in New York City, and I wanted my younger daughter to wear her snow boots to school, but she wanted to wear sneakers. (Why do children always resist wearing appropriate gear?) I could tell by the warning signs that she was on the brink of getting very riled up. Without this resolution, I would have answered her protests with a stream of contradictions: "The boots aren't uncomfortable," "You've worn them before, and they felt fine," etc. Instead …

How to get birth control for teens without parental knowledge?

Asked: How to get birth control for teens without parental knowledge?

Me and my girlfriend are 15 and we have just been sexually active. We've done it with a condom every time except once. I pulled out that time. We want to get birth control pills but we cannot go to our parents for permission. I know you need a prescription from the doctor but don't you need insurance for the exam and the pills? We live in New York City and its not really money that's the problem but what do you need to bring with you in order to take the exam? can you pay in cash? Also, where can you get it and do they allow teenagers in?

Emily Perkins discusses ‘The Forrests’ at the Sydney Writers’ Festival

www.bloomsburyanz.com An interview with Emily Perkins at the Sydney Writers' Festival about her novel, THE FORRESTS. In the book, the main character Dorothy Forrest is immersed in the sensory world around her; she lives in the flickering moment. From the age of seven, when her odd, disenfranchised family moves from New York City to the wide skies of Auckland, to the very end of her life, this is her great gift and possible misfortune. Through the wilderness of a commune, to falling in love, to early marriage and motherhood, from the glorious anguish of parenting to the loss of everything worked for and the unexpected return of love, Dorothy is swept along by time. Her family looms and recedes; revelations come to light; death changes everything, but somehow life remains as potent as it ever was, and the joy in just being won't let her go. In a narrative that shifts and moves, growing as wild as the characters, The Forrests is an extraordinary literary achievement. A novel that sings with colour and memory, it speaks of family and time, dysfunction, ageing and loneliness, about heat, youth, and how life can change if 'you're lucky enough to be around for it'.

Jealous of my sisters true life love story. Is it possible to find true love?

Aubrey Davis Asked: Jealous of my sisters true life love story. Is it possible to find true love?

My older sister and I are 8 years apart. I'm 17 and she's 26. Don't get me wrong, I love my sister to death, we are so close…I love her and her husband and kids so much but I can't help to be a little jealous.

When Danielle (my sister) was 15, a few German exchange students came to her school, one of them being a guy, Lukas. She never even talked to him or saw him when he came, but a year later when she was 16 and he was 17, he messaged her online somewhere and they started talking. They became so close and video chatted for hours each day for months. Even though they were so far away, they really fell for each other. Some times things would happen, they would stop talking and date other people but my sister always loved him. My sister is African American and so beautiful and he's a blue eyed blonde haired German and they really loved each other for who they were. When my sister was 18 and out of highschool, they finally met and fell even deeper in love with each other. Fast foward 7 years and now guess what, they are MARRIED with two gorgeous babies (Anja my neice is 2 and Sebastian is 3 months old) living in this amazing condo in New York City. They've pretty much been with each other for years. When I see them together, their love radiates, you can see how much they love each other. They are such a beautiful, fun, funny couple, it's amazing to watch. They are also amazing parents, and they look so cute together. They are just so happy and their love story is incredible, that it's almost unreal how everything worked out.

I'm almost 18 and I've never had a serious relationship, and I feel like i'm the only one. It makes me kind of sad and I feel hopeless that I'll ever find someone that I truly love and will be with forever.Even my parents met when they were younger so it's almost embarrassing because I feel like my parents want me to have a relationship. Do you think this can ever happen?

How Old Should You Be To Go On An Out-of-State Field Trip?

Shelby Asked: How Old Should You Be To Go On An Out-of-State Field Trip?

My school is going to have a field trip for all 9th graders to New York City. My mom won't let me go. I've already gotten almost all of the money (it's $1,100 and I've gotten $900). She says I'm too young. I've been to New York 3 times already. There's going to be tons of chaperones (teachers, seeing as parents aren't allowed to go). It's about 5 days, 4 nights. The boys and girls are on different sides of the hotel. Do you think I should be allowed to go? I'll be 14, by the way.

Did I make a big mistake?

Chris Asked: Did I make a big mistake?

My friend and I graduated from college in Michigan recently and always talked about moving to a big city together. We recently made a move to New York City to pursue our teaching careers. I had big doubts about making the move because of the cost and job prospects. I was leaning toward staying in Michigan and substitute teaching for a while and living with my parents to save money but I kept my word and made the move. We currently both found 2 jobs, one is for substituting in the charter schools and the other is a community outreach/ tutoring job. We are both subletting an apt for one month to see how it all works out. I'm getting low on money and not sure what to do. I feel like I want to go home but he keeps saying there is nothing back in Michigan and persuading me to be here. I'm hoping to start making money when school starts, but I don't know. I'm not sure if its being homesick or the right thing to do.

    Margaret Official Trailer (2011)

Margaret centers on a 17-year-old New York City high-school student named Lisa Cohen (Anna Paquin), who may have contributed to a bus accident in Manhattan's Upper West Side. Lisa's mother, Joan (played by Lonergan's wife, J. Smith-Cameron), is a single mom grappling with parenting and her acting career. A sexually active teen, Lisa inappropriately flirts with one of her teachers (Matt Damon) while arguing with her classmates about the Middle East. Lisa ultimately becomes involved in a legal action against the bus operator (Mark Ruffalo). The film's title comes from the Margaret in the poem "Spring and Fall: To a Young Child" by 19th century poet Gerard Manley Hopkins, briefly alluded to in one of Lisa's classrooms.

Perspectives And Tips On Parenting – Nobody Ever Said It Would Be Easy

Children are learning even when a parent doesn’t even think about being watched. One reason children don’t always do as parents say, is because they do what parents do. Most parents know that their children are picking up bad things from them, but can’t always stop it. It is a human thing, not a criticism, but children take on the traits of the parents, both good and bad. Life is a matter of attitude, because everyone has their bad days, along with their good ones. It is challenging to give children positive learning experiences on days that are not too good. Parents need to be aware of their own attitudes when around their children and learn not to fly off the handle.

Raising children becomes magnified greatly for each additional child you have. So let’s say a few words about favoritism exhibited by parents toward children. Having an instant like for one child over another is not uncommon, so it will take some effort not to show favoritism.

The most important thing is to be aware of it and maintain a healthy perspective. Children need to feel loved and wanted by the parents, and that is the responsibility of a parent. Any situation where children have been shown favoritism, needs to be repaired as soon as possible, before matters become irreparable.

As you raise your children, you will notice that, as many experts agree, each child will be more proficient in different subjects. If your kids are academically inclined, more than likely it is something that they were born with in regard to their interest level. Some kids will have a strong desire to do things outside of school, whereas others will thrive doing schoolwork. Parents that actually know their children will have a better chance of helping them as they grow up. The completion of high school should be something that you help your children move toward as they grow older. If they need help with any subject, make sure that they realize you will help them by hiring a tutor if they need it.

Most parents realize and understand the value of consistency when it comes to enforcing the rules and operating policies in the home. One of the big problems with being consistent, is that the two parents can’t always agree on how tough the standards should be. Parents definitely need to know how to agree, because the children will quickly learn which one will give in. Unfortunately, quite often the lenient parent is unwilling to be more strict, and the tough parent is unwilling to be more lenient, so they are actually the problem, not the children. Parents can be their own worst enemies when they are unable to come up with a set of rules where everyone could be consistent.

What any parent should do is take part in their child’s life as much as possible, understand what they are going through, and be there for them during the tough times. Solid, mutual and positive communications are essential so possible issues do not escalate.
