Successful Parenting: You Can Make It Happen!

Allowing your child to socialize with children of the same age is important. You should make an effort to get to know your kid’s friends and those friends’ parents. Cultivating social contacts between parents will help ensure your child is supervised in accordance with your wishes. A network of closely-connected parents can be a powerful child-rearing resource.

Teens seem to feel that they will get in trouble if they feel they are in a situation the parents won’t approve of. They need to be told that even if the parents get a phone call from them in the middle of the night; their lost sleep is preferred over their kids getting into a car with someone who has been drinking or out of another situation equally as toxic.

If you have teenage children, try to eat dinner as a family at the dinner table as often as you can. Sometimes teens may prefer to eat in front of the TV or at their computer desk. Having dinner at the dinner table as a family gives your children a chance to share with you about their day. This is a good way for you to connect with your teenagers and to show interest in what they are doing.

While the advice of close friends and family can be very helpful, you don’t need to listen to the unsolicited tips from every aunt, cousin and coworker. If your preschooler resists going to bed, try working with him or her to develop an evening ritual. Once you’ve worked it out together, make a chart or picture illustrating what happens. Each night, you can use this as a guide to help your child fall asleep. If they try to demand something else, use the picture as a tool.

Use a pump or hand express milk if you are engorged and the baby is not ready to eat when breastfeeding. There are few things more painful to a new mother than having produced too much milk and not having a way to release it. Our bodies gradually start to produce only what is needed for the baby but it takes a little while to regulate. By expressing some of the milk you can reduce the pain until baby’s next meal.

For a great visual reminder of things that your child shouldn’t touch, come up with a sign or signal that you can place in areas where little hands aren’t allowed. A printed photo of a stop sign may be just the thing to remind your child that he or she isn’t supposed to touch or play in a cupboard or drawer.

If your baby or young child has diarrhea, make sure to give them Pedialyte and lots of fluids. Just like adults, babies and young children get dehydrated after they have had excessive diarrhea, which can cause severe health problems. If your child has diarrhea for more than a few days, bring him or her to the doctor.

Always remember how much your children enrich your life. There will be times that you are frustrated, but it is important to hug and kiss your kids regardless of the kind of day you are having. Make sure they know how lucky you feel to be their parent. These simple actions will lift your mood and make your children feel loved.

Take advantage of your child’s school’s computer records to keep up with your child’s daily progress. Most school systems today have computerized tracking of grades and assignments. Get the access code to that system and use it on a daily basis to make sure nothing slips up on you when report cards come out.

Often times it’s easy to give a lot of attention to your kids when they are acting out. They demand attention through their negative behaviors at home and in public. In order to stem this trend of tantrums, start giving more energy to the positive moments. Feed into the desired behaviors instead of the discouraged behaviors, and watch your kids bask in the glow of confidence while their poor behavior subsides.
